2024 NFL Season, Week 1: What We Gained from 49ers' success over Jet on Monday night.

Mason Shines in McCaffrey's Absence

Christian McCaffrey’s unexpected spot on the inactive list raised eyebrows, especially given his questionable status with a calf and Achilles issue. The concern centered on how the 49ers would adapt against a Jets defense known for its toughness. However, the worry was unwarranted. Kyle Shanahan, renowned for maximizing the potential of lesser-known running backs, plugged Jordan Mason into the lineup, and he delivered in a big way. Mason racked up 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries, fueling a dominant 49ers ground game that controlled the clock (38:40 to 21:20) and featured Brock Purdy spreading the ball around to six different receivers. Mason's standout performance echoes the rise of past 49ers running backs like Raheem Mostert, Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson, and Matt Breida, if only for one night.

Jets' Defense Falters

Under Robert Saleh, the Jets' defense has often been their saving grace amid quarterback struggles. But on Monday night, the defense faltered, allowing the 49ers to amass 401 yards and sustain multiple long drives. Five of San Francisco’s nine drives exceeded nine plays, with four covering over 70 yards. Surprisingly, the 49ers didn’t rely heavily on third-down conversions, finishing 6-for-13. The Jets, missing holdout Haason Reddick, struggled with their pass rush (10 total pressures) and couldn’t counter Shanahan’s game plan. From the second quarter on, the 49ers seemed to out-scheme and out-execute the Jets, leaving New York's defense looking outmatched.

Shanahan’s Offensive Mastery

If the time of possession didn’t highlight Kyle Shanahan’s prowess, his play-calling certainly did. Shanahan had the game firmly in his grasp from the 49ers’ third possession, skillfully integrating various run concepts and keeping New York’s pass defense off balance. A standout moment came when Shanahan dialed up a wheel route for fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who had a 34-yard reception. This display of offensive ingenuity underscored Shanahan’s deep understanding of his system and his ability to exploit defensive weaknesses, leading the 49ers to a commanding season-opening victory.

Rodgers Provides a Glimpse of the Jets' Potential

Aaron Rodgers experienced both highs and lows in his first full game with the Jets. After an early fumble by Breece Hall, Rodgers orchestrated a balanced 12-play, 70-yard drive, featuring key completions to Garrett Wilson and ending with a Hall touchdown run. This drive sparked excitement and social media buzz, hailed as one of the best Jets possessions in years. However, the Jets' inability to sustain momentum, coupled with a 16-point deficit, limited their opportunities to showcase their offensive potential. Despite an interception and only 21 pass attempts, Rodgers showed flashes of the impact he could have with the Jets.

Jets’ New Benchmark

The Jets entered the season with high expectations, only to have them dampened by early setbacks. Rodgers managed to play through the game, but the Jets’ defense, which had been a reliable asset, was notably ineffective. Reddick’s absence was felt, and this result may prompt action on his contract holdout. Regardless, the Jets now understand where they stand against an elite team, providing a crucial learning experience as the season unfolds.

Next Gen Stat of the Game: Niners left tackle Trent Williams did not allow a single QB pressure on 33 pass-blocking snaps, marking his first game without allowing a pressure on at least 14 pass-blocking snaps since Week 2 of the 2022 season.

NFL Research: Shanahan’s 49ers controlled the game with a time of possession of 38:40 compared to the Jets’ 21:20, which was the lowest possession time in Aaron Rodgers' career.
