TURLOCK — A new lawsuit has been filed against California Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, alleging that she violated a woman's First Amendment rights when she requested the woman leave a news conference in Stanislaus County in June.
Kelly Coelho, who has initiated the legal action, is seeking $5 million in damages. The complaint states that on June 21, 2024, Coelho attended a protest in Turlock concerning the placement of sexually violent predators (SVPs) in Stanislaus County. After the protest, Coelho went to the Turlock Police Department where a community meeting and news conference about the SVP issue were being held.
According to the lawsuit, Alvarado-Gil, who was speaking at the event, asked a law enforcement officer to remove Coelho from the premises.
CBS Sacramento attempted to contact Alvarado-Gil's office for comment but had not received a response by the time of publication.
Earlier in September, another lawsuit was filed against Alvarado-Gil by her former chief of staff, who accused her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Alvarado-Gil’s attorney dismissed the claims as coming from a "disgruntled employee" and expressed confidence that the senator would be exonerated.
In August, the senator attracted attention for her announcement of switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
