_"You don't know what to expect": Trump highlights his biggest challenge in debating Harris_
Former President Donald Trump, in an interview with NBC News on Tuesday morning, shared his thoughts on debating Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of their first matchup.
"You don't know what to expect. She's changed all of her policies over the years," Trump remarked, just hours before the debate in Philadelphia.
While acknowledging her shifting positions, Trump noted it might work in his favor. "It makes it much easier. She's no longer believable," he said.
This will be Trump’s second debate of the 2024 election, but his first with Harris, who is facing her inaugural general election debate as a presidential candidate.
Despite a more laid-back debate preparation compared to Harris, Trump stated he's feeling "great." His focus sharpened in the final days leading up to the debate, with a source close to his team revealing that recent favorable polling numbers may have boosted his confidence.
Three insiders, speaking anonymously, described Trump’s earlier approach as disengaged but noted a change in his demeanor as debate day approached. Two suggested that positive polling, showing him as a potential "change" candidate, has bolstered his focus and mindset.
Two sources indicated that Trump's strategy won't focus on labeling Harris as a flip-flopper. Instead, he plans to highlight her most liberal past positions and hold her accountable for them. One source referenced comments by Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., as a guide. On NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Sanders described Harris as a progressive who is "doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election."
Trump has also shifted his positions on several issues over the years, including abortion, TikTok, and even birtherism.
As for Harris, her strategy will focus on "reminding people of what it was like during Donald Trump’s years," according to a source familiar with her debate preparation.
Her team had unsuccessfully lobbied to keep both candidates' microphones on throughout the debate. However, with muted microphones during the other candidate's speaking time, they are still preparing for unscripted and potentially volatile moments, including the possibility of Trump making derogatory remarks about her.
The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
